Sometimes the problem isn’t that a person doesn’t know what to do.

They know exactly what to do.

They just can’t access the version of themselves that can do it from the state they’re currently in.

Think about how differently you communicate when you’re confident versus uncertain.

How differently you make decisions when you’re focused versus overwhelmed.

How differently you perform when you’re energized versus defeated.

Same person.

Same intelligence.

Same abilities.

Different state. Different result.

That’s what makes state management such an important skill.

The 5-Minute State Reset is a simple process designed to interrupt the current pattern, direct attention toward a more useful internal state, and mentally rehearse carrying that state into the situation where it’s needed.

It can be used as a standalone exercise or adapted by a practitioner as part of their existing work.

Same person

Same intelligence

Same abilities

Different state

Different results

STEP 1 - INTERRUPT

Don’t begin by fighting the unwanted state.

Interrupt it.

Have the person change something physical.

Stand up if they’ve been sitting.

Change posture.

Move to another chair.

Look somewhere different.

Take a comfortable, slower breath.

The purpose is simple:

Stop rehearsing the exact pattern you’re trying to change

A state isn’t only something we think.

It has physical components—posture, breathing, muscle tension, facial expression, attention, internal dialogue, imagery, and more.

Change the pattern before trying to build another one.

STEP 2 - IDENTITY

Ask: “What state would be more useful right now?”
Not: “How do you want to feel forever?”

We’re not trying to redesign someone’s entire life in five minutes.
What would be useful right now?

This matters because we’re moving attention away from: “What don’t I want?”

toward:

“What do I want instead?”

STEP 3 - ACCESS

Now ask: “When have you felt that before?”

It doesn’t have to be the same situation.

If they want confidence before a presentation, the memory doesn’t need to involve public speaking.

Maybe they felt incredibly confident closing a business deal.  Playing a sport.

Walking into an important meeting.  Performing.

Handling a difficult situation.

Go there.

Ask them to remember it associatively.

What did you see?

What did you hear?

How were you standing?

How were you breathing?

What did that confidence feel like in your body?

Don’t merely remember the event. Recreate the state.

STEP 4 - AMPLIFY

Once you see the state beginning to change, build it.

Ask:

“What happens if you make that feeling stronger?”

Change posture.

Let the breathing match.

Bring back the expression.

Make the internal picture clearer.

Remember the internal dialogue.

Then:

“If that state had a physical switch, what would it be?”

It could be pressing a thumb and finger together.

Making a fist.

Touching the wrist.

A word.

A breath.

A particular posture.

The exact trigger matters less than deliberately associating it with the state and rehearsing the connection.

STEP 5 - FUTURE PACE

Now take the state where it’s actually needed.

Ask them to imagine the upcoming situation.

But this time, imagine entering that situation already possessing the desired state.

You’re no longer rehearsing the problem.

You’re rehearsing the response you want available when the moment arrives.

THE IMPORTANT PART

.

The purpose of the 5-Minute State Reset isn’t to pretend unwanted emotions don’t exist.

And it isn’t a promise that every difficult emotional state disappears in five minutes.

It’s much more practical than that.

It teaches someone to recognize:

My current state influences what I can access—but my current state isn't necessarily the only state available to me."

Five Simple Steps

The next time you—or someone you’re working with—says:

"I know what I should do.
I just can't seem to do it."

Don’t immediately ask what they need to know.

Ask:

WHAT STATE WOULD MAKE
DOING IT EASIER?

Sometimes the resource isn’t missing.

Access to the resource is.

Sometimes the resource isn't missing.

Access to the resource is
